Virus and Spyware Removal

Virus and Spyware Viruses are small programs often imbedded in websites, e-mail, or programs that can steal private information, attack other individuals or companies, and spread to other users. Spyware often can cause random pop ups, redirect your web browser, or gather information on how you use your computer to send back to advertising companies. Both can be very frustrating, difficult to get rid of, and potentially harmful to your property or network connection. If you have an updated Antivirus program, keep your Operating System updated, and periodically run an anti-spyware scanner you should be able to avoid most viruses and spyware. This guide is written for Microsoft's Windows operating systems, since Windows is much more likely to be infected than Mac or Linux. This guide also assumes you already have an infection. If you wish to prevent viruses and spyware, check our Securing Your Computer section. You are of course welcome to call us for assistance if these instructions are hard to follow.

Tools and Software You Will Need

If you are in the Residence Halls, go to your community Front Desk and check out a STS Utility CD. This disk will contain all the programs you will need. There is also a more thorough Virus Cleanup Guide in the Advanced Cleaning Methods section which you can run off the CD even if you are not online. If you do not have this CD, get the following:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 (261MB) or Windows 2000 SP4 (130MB) if you are using these Operating Systems.
  • F-Secure Anti-Virus (requires UGA MyID) or a comparable Anti-Virus with an active subscription.
  • Ad-Aware or comparable Anti-Spyware program.
  • WinSock XP Fix - needed to fix networking parts of Windows when Spyware and Viruses break them.
  • Mozilla Firefox or Opera. These alternative web browsers include pop-up blockers and excellent security. Many online viruses specifically target Internet Explorer, so using an alternative browser can make you immune to almost all of them. Spyware caused redirects typically do not affect these browsers, and they often offer many more features.
Removing viruses takes a great deal of time, often around 2 hours from start to finish but exact times can greatly vary. Fortunately most of this time you will not need to pay attention to the computer as it scans and can often just leave it scanning and continue when you get back.
